Fun for Kids and Parents
Parent/Student Book Clubs
Each year, we hold a book club for grade 2-5 students and parents. This is a chance for our students to read a book outside of school with a parent (or another special adult). For the club meeting, all the students and grown-ups gather for lunch and activities to discuss the book together. Our 2024-2025 club meetings were a great chance to celebrate reading!
3rd graders read DogTown

2nd graders read Emma MaKenna, Full Out

4th graders read El Deafo

5th graders read Crenshaw

Reading Resources

Even after your kids have learned how to read for themselves, it's still important to read to them and with them. Most kids can comprehend much more of what they hear read aloud than they can of what they read by themselves, and this continues all the way through middle school. The benefits of reading are well-documented. Unsurprisingly, kids who read more, become better readers and do better in school. But they also become more healthy mentally and emotionally. Bozgün, K., & Akın-Kösterelioğlu, M. (2021) found that students who spend more time reading tend to be more empathetic and have higher academic grit and subjective well-being.
But how and what should we read to our kids? Here are some great sites and blogs for plenty of suggestions for all ages of readers:
